Asylum and VAWA Psychological Evaluations in Connecticut
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) allows certain immigrants who have experienced abuse by a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident spouse, parent, or child to seek immigration relief independently of their abuser.
A psychological evaluation can help document the emotional and psychological impact of abuse and provide supporting evidence for an immigration petition.
As a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in trauma, emotional abuse, and relational trauma, I provide comprehensive VAWA psychological evaluations for individuals throughout Connecticut.
What is VAWA
The Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) was created to provide protection for individuals experiencing abuse who may otherwise feel trapped because of their immigration status.
Many survivors remain in abusive relationships because their spouse controls finances, legal documents, housing, or immigration paperwork. In some cases, an undocumented status may be used as a tool of power, control, or coercion.
VAWA provides a pathway for eligible individuals to seek immigration relief without relying on their abusive spouse to sponsor them.
What Is the Purpose of a Psychological Evaluation?
A psychological evaluation does not determine whether a case is approved.
The purpose of the evaluation is to assess and document the psychological impact of the abuse and provide a professional clinical opinion regarding the credibility and consistency of the individual's reported experiences.
The evaluation may explore:
Emotional abuse
Coercive control
Psychological trauma
Anxiety
Depression
Post-traumatic stress symptoms
Relationship dynamics
Impact on daily functioning
The final report is prepared for use by your immigration attorney as part of your case documentation.
-
A VAWA psychological evaluation may be appropriate for individuals who have experienced abuse by a:
U.S. Citizen spouse
Lawful Permanent Resident spouse
U.S. Citizen parent
Lawful Permanent Resident parent
U.S. Citizen child
Eligibility is determined by immigration law, and your attorney is the best person to advise whether you qualify.
-
The evaluation process generally includes:
Initial Consultation
We discuss your situation, answer questions about the evaluation process, and determine whether the evaluation is appropriate for your needs.
Clinical Interview
A comprehensive interview focused on your personal history, relationship experiences, and the emotional impact of the abuse.
Assessment and Report Writing
Information gathered during the evaluation is analyzed and compiled into a detailed written report for your attorney.
Attorney Collaboration
When appropriate, I may communicate directly with your attorney regarding the evaluation process and documentation requirements.
-
If you believe you may qualify for VAWA, it is generally best to speak with an immigration attorney as soon as possible.
Your attorney can determine eligibility and advise you on when a psychological evaluation would be beneficial for your case.
-
VAWA petitions are generally administrative processes handled through immigration filings and supporting documentation.
Specific legal procedures should always be discussed with your attorney.
